Great Independent Coffee Shops Beyond the Bay Area

Sometimes a coffee shop is worth writing about even when it is far from home. These are the shops I found while traveling.

Hôtel de Ville by Man Versus Machine — Munich

Hôtel de Ville by Man Versus Machine

📍 Munich, 🇩🇪 Germany Marienplatz Marienplatz 8, 80331 Munich, Germany

Hôtel de Ville is Man Versus Machine's little café tucked under a Gothic stone arch right at Marienplatz, and the gold lettering on the window makes it hard to walk past. Inside it's all black-and-white terrazzo, with a short bar, a small seating nook by the window, and bags of their own beans lined up along the glass. Even the espresso machine and the cups carry the crocodile logo. The sign on the sidewalk says it all: the croissant, they note, is there because Munich didn't have a good one before. They roast in Munich and also serve ceremonial grade matcha, so it's easy to make this a long stop on a walk through the old town.
